Food drop is a community driven food sharing service for apartments, facilitating the sharing of fruit and veg among neighbours and the development of increased community interaction.

Objectives:

To reduce food waste, working from a brief given by the EPA. This research was conducted by a team of 14 designers.

“The Food Waste Charter for Ireland was introduced in response to the country’s commitment to achieve a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030.

Key findings:

Overshopping generates a surplus amount of food in homes, which often goes uneaten.

“I usually buy more just in case, but it ends up sitting at the back of the fridge.”

Bulk purchasing is perceived as higher value and an incentive to customers, which contributes to overshopping.

“It’s cheaper to buy in bulk, even when you don’t need it.”

Single use ingredients are purchased by aspirational shoppers who want to try new recipes.

“The other week I wanted to make ramen and we had nothing to go in it, so I had to go out for stuff.”

During the development stage, we were 3 and I concentrated on the digital aspect for the last week of the project, creating a site that would entice people into the concept of sharing food using food drop.

1. Create a site map and flow for ease of use and clear concept visualisation
